Gyémánt karátsúly

Az alapvető 7C

Did you know that diamonds are weighed in carats (which is different from gold's Karat)? One carat equals 0.2 grams, so a 0.50-carat diamond weighs 0.1 grams, and a 5-carat diamond is 1 gram.

As a diamond's carat weight goes up, its size increases too. But this increase isn't directly proportional — if we were mapping it on a graph it would track as a curve. So, a 2.0-carat diamond won’t look exactly twice as big as a 1.0-carat diamond, as per the below example.

Szakértői tipp 1

When comparing diamonds of similar weights, it’s useful to check their measurements closely. Diamonds with the same carat weight can have quite different dimensions. Choosing a diamond with wider measurements will give you a larger surface area (and therefore the look of a bigger diamond) for the same price.

Szakértői tipp 2

0.50ct, 0.75ct, and 1.0ct diamonds are really popular, and even though there’s not a huge difference in weight, prices can differ significantly. For example, a 0.90ct diamond could be between 10-20% better value than a 1.0ct diamond of the exact same quality. The two will look almost identical, but one is a more accessible price than the other.

Everything you need to know about carat weight

What is carat weight?

Carat weight is a unit of measurement for a diamond’s weight, and one of the key factors in determining its value. One carat is the equivalent to 0.2 grams, or the weight of a paperclip. Carat weight is not an indication of a diamond’s size, though.

How does carat weight affect a diamond’s size?

  1. Shape: Even if they are exactly the same carat weight, different diamond shapes can appear bigger or smaller. A round diamond will appear larger than a princess-cut diamond of the same carat weight.
  2. Cut: In addition to carat weight, a diamond's cut can also affect its perceived size. A well-cut diamond will reflect light more effectively, making it appear larger and more brilliant.
  3. Appearance: As well as carat weight, colour, clarity, and a diamond’s setting can impact how large or small it appears.

What does carat weight mean for diamond price?

Carat weight is one of the main factors in determining a diamond's price, with larger diamonds typically commanding higher prices per carat. However, the relationship between carat weight and price is not linear, as larger diamonds are rarer, and therefore more valuable.

What’s the most popular carat weight for engagement rings?

Generally, anywhere between 1 to 2 carats. These stones are striking to look at, but also comparatively affordable. What matters most though is choosing a stone that’s special to you and reflects the unique love story of the person wearing it.

Carat weight vs. diamond cut: What matters more?

Carat weight and cut are both important, and they affect a diamond’s appearance in different ways. While carat weight refers to size, cut impacts the way a diamond sparkles in the light. A well-cut diamond of a modest carat weight can appear more impressive than a larger diamond with a poorer cut.
